To maintain active teaching status, DAN Instructors must maintain active DAN membership and hold current CPR and First Aid certifications. While agency dive leader status is required initially, the ongoing DAN requirement focuses on membership and fundamental lifesaving credentials, not necessarily a specific number of annual dives or IT status.

Adult learning principles emphasize self-discovery and positive reinforcement during debriefings. Interrupting disrupts the flow and undermines the candidate’s confidence, while ignoring it allows a standards violation to persist.

The F-A-S-T acronym (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) is standard for stroke assessment and is integrated into DAN’s neurological evaluations. An instructor candidate must demonstrate accurate knowledge of this acronym to pass the practical application.

Quality assurance and standardization require ITs to use official, standardized evaluation slates or rubrics provided by DAN. This ensures all candidates are graded objectively against the same performance criteria, rather than subjective opinions or peer reviews.

While elevating the legs (Trendelenburg-like positioning) was historically used for hypovolemic shock, it is contraindicated in cardiogenic shock (heart failure) because returning more fluid volume to a failing pump can exacerbate the condition. Instructors must teach current, evidence-based shock management.

DAN standards require instructors to submit course rosters and process certifications within a strict timeframe (typically 10 days) to ensure students receive their credentials promptly and liability records are accurately maintained by headquarters.
