PADI Course Director

According to PADI evaluation criteria, a score of 3.0 is awarded when a candidate recognizes and corrects a problem but fails to anticipate it. A score of 4.0 requires the candidate to anticipate and prevent the problem entirely. A score of 2.0 indicates the problem was neither recognized nor corrected.

Instructors are expected to promote the PADI System of diver education, which includes referencing specific PADI materials like the RDP. While using supplemental non-PADI material is not a direct standards violation, failing to integrate the required PADI tools results in a low score for that specific evaluation criterion. The rest of the presentation should be scored on its own merits.

PADI General Standards dictate that an IDC candidate must have been a certified diver for at least six months prior to starting the course. While they only need 60 logged dives to start the IDC (and 100 for the IE), the time-since-certification requirement is absolute. Therefore, the candidate must wait another month.

Effective counseling requires addressing deficiencies privately and providing actionable steps for improvement. Assigning a makeup presentation allows the candidate to implement the feedback in a controlled manner. Ignoring safety issues or forcing immediate public repetition violates adult learning principles and PADI quality standards.

Candidates must have successfully completed an IDC or Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program within 12 months of attending the IE. They only need 100 logged dives, not 120, to attend the IE. Assisting with courses and holding an MSDT rating are not prerequisites for the IE.

Losing visual contact and physical control of a student in open water is a significant safety issue that warrants a score of 2.0 or lower. Even if the candidate eventually notices the drifting student, the temporary loss of control violates fundamental risk management practices. A passing score of 3.0 or higher requires maintaining continuous control of all students.

The standalone PADI Assistant Instructor course requires candidates to successfully complete at least two confined water, two knowledge development, and one open water teaching presentation. The higher requirement of three knowledge, four confined, and two open water presentations applies to the full IDC. This ensures AI candidates have a foundational, but slightly reduced, level of pedagogical training.

The Course Director is responsible for the quality assurance of the IDC and must ensure candidates are scored accurately according to PADI standards. Correcting the Staff Instructor privately maintains their professional credibility while ensuring the candidate receives the appropriate, standardized score. Interrupting publicly undermines the staff, while accepting a false score compromises training quality.

For Specialty Instructor training courses that include open water dives, the Course Director must conduct at least one open water dive with the candidates. During this dive, candidates practice and demonstrate the specific teaching and control techniques relevant to that specialty. They do not need to repeat the entire student-level dive requirements.

A healthy professional pipeline requires marketing to divers at multiple levels, including Advanced and Rescue divers, rather than just immediate prospects. Targeting instructors from other agencies for crossovers also brings in immediate IDC candidates. Lowering prerequisites is a standards violation, and offering heavy discounts devalues the professional training.

Under the indirect supervision of a Course Director, an IDC Staff Instructor is authorized to evaluate and critique knowledge development and confined water presentations. The Course Director must directly supervise open water evaluations and deliver specific core curriculum components. The Course Director is ultimately responsible for final counseling and certification sign-offs.

In a QA inquiry regarding a former candidate, the Course Director’s role is to provide accurate training records and insights from the IDC. PADI Quality Management handles the actual investigation and any disciplinary actions. The Course Director is not responsible for investigating the dive center or suspending the instructor’s status.

PADI standards specifically require IDC candidates to demonstrate Rescue Exercise 7 (Unresponsive Diver at the Surface) to a role-model quality standard. This ensures that future instructors possess flawless technique in administering in-water rescue breathing and equipment removal. While other rescue skills are important, Exercise 7 is the mandatory, formally evaluated skill during the IDC.

Course Directors must act as mentors, providing supportive, individualized counseling to help candidates overcome challenges like test anxiety. A private review identifies weaknesses without causing embarrassment, and a relaxed retake environment fosters success. Allowing open-book exams violates standards, and public shaming destroys candidate confidence.

To attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) and earn the OWSI rating, a candidate must hold a current EFR Instructor rating or equivalent from a recognized CPR/First Aid organization. It is not an optional specialty, but a strict prerequisite. They do not, however, need to have taught any EFR courses prior to the IDC.

A score of 5 on the skill circuit requires role-model, demonstration-quality execution without excessive or unnecessary movements. Because the candidate relied on hand movements to maintain the hover, a score of 2 or 3 is appropriate depending on the severity of the sculling. A score of 1 is reserved for a complete inability to perform the skill.

Adult learning principles favor varied, interleaved scheduling that mixes classroom theory with immediate practical application in confined and open water. This reduces burnout and helps candidates contextualize what they are learning. Front-loading all theory or creating artificially stressful schedules hinders effective learning and retention.

PADI standards require all professional-level candidates to have an unconditional medical clearance for diving signed by a physician. A conditional clearance (such as a depth restriction) is invalid for professional training. The candidate cannot participate in any in-water activities until an unconditional clearance is provided.

The five standard PADI Dive Theory exams evaluate a candidate’s knowledge of Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Skills & Environment, and the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP). While understanding the business of diving is part of the IDC curriculum, Dive Center Operations is not one of the five formal dive theory exams.

To be authorized to issue the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, an instructor must hold the Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) credential. Earning the MSDT requires the instructor to have certified at least 25 divers and hold at least five PADI Specialty Instructor ratings. A newly certified Open Water Scuba Instructor does not automatically possess this authorization.
