SSI Instructor Trainer

SSI standards require objective scoring using established criteria, followed by constructive debriefing and remediation for failed skills. Interrupting the presentation disrupts the learning flow unless there is an immediate safety risk, and falsifying scores or expelling the candidate violates SSI Quality Assurance protocols.

To enter an ITC, SSI requires the candidate to be at least 18, hold a Divemaster rating (or equivalent), and have 75 logged dives. Having 100 logged dives is required later for attending the Instructor Evaluation (IE), not for initial ITC entry.

The SSI Customer Loyalty Cycle is designed to keep divers engaged through continuing education, equipment sales, and local diving experiences. Discounting devalues the training, and withholding cards or misusing training philosophies violates professional ethics and SSI standards.

Omitting emergency procedures is a severe safety and liability risk that must be corrected through immediate feedback and remediation during the ITC. Waiting for the IE sets the candidate up for failure, while immediate credential revocation is an overreaction for a training environment mistake.

SSI emphasizes the Total Teaching System, where instructors act as facilitators who connect academic knowledge to real-world diving and equipment sales. Memorization and rigid timing are less important than student comprehension, and instructors are required to use official SSI materials.

SSI General Training Standards dictate a strict 8:1 maximum ratio for professional-level ITC confined water training. Unlike recreational courses, the presence of certified assistants does not increase the maximum allowable candidate-to-IT ratio.

Recognized instructors do not need to repeat an entire ITC, but they must complete an official SSI Professional Crossover program to learn SSI-specific philosophies, standards, and systems. Issuing certifications without this training or substituting it with a co-teaching assignment violates SSI crossover standards.

Maintaining visual contact during demonstrations is a critical supervision standard; failing to do so requires a low score and mandatory remediation. Passing the candidate ignores a vital safety flaw, while failing them for the entire ITC over a correctable error defeats the purpose of training.

The SSI Master Instructor rating is a mandatory prerequisite for attending the Instructor Trainer Seminar (ITS). The other ratings are lower-level professional certifications that do not meet the extensive experience requirements needed to become an IT.

An IT’s primary responsibility is safety; if a candidate’s poor positioning puts the group at risk, the IT must intervene immediately and score the presentation accordingly. Allowing the group to drift is dangerous, while expulsion is an extreme measure for a scenario that can be remediated.

The Total DiveLog is designed to be an interactive tool that keeps divers engaged with the sport by tracking their progress, gear, and future goals. It is a marketing and retention tool for the dive center, not just a legal or instructor-only database.

Effective mentoring requires building confidence through positive reinforcement, structured practice, and proper use of SSI training materials. Suggesting they drop out, skip requirements, or rely on rote memorization undermines the candidate’s development and SSI standards.

To ensure absolute objectivity and quality assurance, an IE must be conducted by a certified SSI Instructor Evaluator who was not involved in teaching the candidate’s ITC. Instructor Trainers can prepare candidates, but they cannot evaluate their own students for the final certification.

SSI standards mandate that all professionals must use a complete Total Diving System, which strictly includes an alternate air source. Buddy breathing is an outdated emergency skill, not a substitute for proper equipment, and the candidate cannot enter the water without meeting this standard.

SSI professional water fitness standards require candidates to complete a 15-minute tread water/survival float to demonstrate basic waterman-ship and stamina. The other options are either physically unrealistic, technically dangerous, or exceed SSI’s established time and distance metrics.

The ‘Comfort through Repetition’ philosophy is a cornerstone of SSI training, ensuring students practice skills multiple times until they act reflexively in an emergency. Moving on after a single success fails to build the necessary muscle memory and confidence.

The SSI Quality Assurance process is fundamentally educational and corrective, aiming to help professionals understand and adhere to standards for the sake of safety. While expulsion is possible for severe or repeated violations, the primary goal is remediation, not immediate punishment or public shaming.

To train other instructors in a specific specialty, an IT must first have significant experience teaching that specialty themselves and apply for the upgrade through their Service Center. The rating is not granted automatically, nor does it require commercial diving credentials.

SSI standards require professional candidates to demonstrate an in-water rescue of an unconscious diver, including surfacing, a 100-meter tow, rescue breathing, and equipment removal. ACLS, trimix rescues, and extreme breath-holding are outside the scope of recreational instructor training.

Instructors act as ambassadors for the dive center and should educate students on the safety, warranty, and service benefits of buying quality gear locally. Forcing sales through certification blackmail or confiscating personal property is highly unprofessional and unethical.
