Industry standards mandate that any equipment handling gas mixtures with more than 40% oxygen must be properly oxygen cleaned and use O2-compatible components. Using non-cleaned regulators or valves with EAN80 poses a severe risk of fire or explosion. The other options falsely suggest that standard equipment is safe for high-oxygen mixtures.

The formula for MOD is ((PO2 / FO2) – 1) * 10 for meters. Calculating ((1.6 / 0.50) – 1) * 10 yields (3.2 – 1) * 10 = 2.2 * 10 = 22 meters. The other depths represent incorrect mathematical applications or different PO2 limits.

Visual disturbances and muscle twitching are classic warning signs of Central Nervous System (CNS) oxygen toxicity. Ascending reduces the ambient pressure, thereby lowering the PO2 and reducing the toxicity risk. Rapid ascents or switching to higher oxygen mixtures would dangerously exacerbate the situation.

Proper gas switching requires strict verification to ensure the diver does not breathe a gas below its Maximum Operating Depth, which could cause a fatal oxygen toxicity convulsion. Buddy confirmation adds a critical layer of safety. Rushing the switch or closing primary valves introduces severe life-support risks.

Pulmonary oxygen toxicity (the Lorrain Smith effect) affects the lungs during long-duration or multi-day exposures and is tracked using Oxygen Tolerance Units (OTUs) or UPTDs. The CNS clock tracks neurological toxicity, not pulmonary, and SAC rates/nitrogen gradients do not measure oxygen toxicity.

To find the fraction of oxygen (FO2), use the formula FO2 = PO2 / Pata. The ambient pressure at 34 meters is 4.4 ata. Therefore, 1.4 / 4.4 = 0.318, or 31.8%. Rounding down for safety provides EAN31 as the best mix.

If a decompression gas is lost, the diver must complete the decompression obligation using their available back gas, which requires a contingency plan with longer stop times. Ascending without completing decompression risks severe DCS, and sharing a single deco regulator is often impractical and dangerous without specialized equipment.

The Equivalent Air Depth (EAD) formula determines the depth on air that yields the same partial pressure of nitrogen as the Nitrox mix being used. Because Nitrox has less nitrogen than air, the EAD is shallower, allowing the diver to use standard air tables for extended bottom times. It does not calculate MOD or blending requirements.

Proper cylinder labeling is a critical safety protocol to prevent gas mix-ups. The label must include the analyzed oxygen percentage, the calculated MOD, fill date, pressure, and the initials of the person who analyzed it. Relying on memory or incomplete labeling can lead to fatal gas switching errors.

The EAD formula in meters is ((1 – FO2) * Pata / 0.79) * 10 – 10. For EAN32 at 30m (4 ata): ((0.68 * 4) / 0.79) * 10 – 10 = (2.72 / 0.79) * 10 – 10 = 3.44 * 10 – 10 = 34.4 – 10 = 24.4 meters. The closest answer is 24 meters.

A CNS exposure of 85% is dangerously close to the 100% maximum limit, significantly increasing the risk of an oxygen toxicity convulsion. The diver must wait for the CNS clock to decay over an extended surface interval. Breathing pure oxygen at the surface would only add to the CNS burden.

A foundational rule of mixed-gas diving is that the person breathing the gas must personally analyze it. Trusting a tag without verification risks breathing a gas at the wrong depth, leading to oxygen toxicity or hypoxia. Underwater analysis is not a standard or safe protocol for primary verification.

Oxygen analyzers must be calibrated before use, typically with ambient air (20.9%) or 100% oxygen for high-mix verification. The flow rate during calibration must match the flow rate during analysis to prevent pressure-induced reading errors. Pure nitrogen calibration or skipping calibration leads to inaccurate and dangerous readings.

Dalton’s Law states that Partial Pressure = Fraction of Gas * Ambient Pressure. Therefore, PO2 = 0.28 * 5 ata = 1.4 ata. A PO2 of 1.4 ata is the standard maximum limit for the working/bottom phase of a technical dive. The other calculations and limits provided are incorrect.

During an oxygen toxicity convulsion, the diver’s glottis is closed. Ascending during the clonic phase will almost certainly cause a pulmonary barotrauma (lung over-expansion injury). The rescuer must keep the regulator in the victim’s mouth, wait for the convulsion to stop, and then ascend.

Partial pressure blending involves putting 100% oxygen into the cylinder before topping it off with compatible air. Because the cylinder is exposed to 100% oxygen at high pressure, it must be meticulously oxygen cleaned to remove hydrocarbons and prevent explosions. Mixing is usually achieved by the turbulence of filling, not vigorous rolling.

High exertion increases carbon dioxide (CO2) production. Retained CO2 acts as a vasodilator, increasing blood flow to the brain and delivering more oxygen to cerebral tissues. This significantly lowers the threshold for a CNS oxygen toxicity hit. It does not act as a buffer or reduce susceptibility.

Oxygen (O2) has a higher molecular weight than nitrogen (N2). Because Nitrox has a higher percentage of oxygen than air, it is slightly denser. While the difference is small at recreational depths, increased gas density increases the work of breathing and the potential for CO2 retention.

Decompression efficiency relies on the gradient between the nitrogen dissolved in the body’s tissues and the nitrogen in the inspired gas. Breathing 100% oxygen creates a zero-nitrogen inspired gas, maximizing the gradient and rapidly accelerating off-gassing. It does not reset the CNS clock; in fact, it adds to the CNS burden.

Standard scuba cylinders require an annual visual inspection (VIP). If the cylinder is used for oxygen-rich mixtures, the oxygen cleaning status must also be renewed annually during the VIP, or immediately if the cylinder is contaminated by being filled from a non-oxygen-clean air source.
