Standard port curves must be adjusted for secondary port differences in time and height to accurately predict local slack water. Failing to do this can result in divers hitting strong currents, while the other options either ignore standard navigational principles or incorrectly dismiss tidal planning on neap tides.

Breaking complex motor skills down into manageable, progressive steps is a core principle of BSAC instructor pedagogy. Having the instructor take control defeats the learning objective, and changing depths or skills does not address the fundamental buoyancy control issue.

The rule of thirds in BSAC technical and advanced diving dictates that the reserve third must be adequate to handle a catastrophic gas loss for either diver, ensuring both can reach the next available gas source or the surface. Severe and deteriorating DCI requires the fastest possible transport to a hyperbaric facility; helicopters can fly at low altitudes to minimize pressure changes. In-water recompression is highly dangerous and not recommended by BSAC, and Entonox is contraindicated for DCI as it exacerbates bubble formation.

Isobaric Counter Diffusion involves two different inert gases moving in opposite directions across tissue boundaries at different rates, risking bubble formation without a change in depth. The other options describe pulmonary barotrauma, a fabricated mechanism, and oxygen toxicity, respectively.

In high-traffic areas, constant surface visibility (SMBs), proper vessel signaling (A-flag), and communication with local maritime authorities (VHF) are critical to prevent boat strikes. Abandoning SMBs leaves divers invisible to the cover boat, and shipping traffic rarely halts at night.

BSAC instructor assessment emphasizes mentoring; correcting an instructor privately preserves their authority and confidence while ensuring the pedagogical error is fixed. Interrupting undermines the instructor, while ignoring the error compromises student safety and learning.

Proper anchoring requires sufficient scope (usually 3:1 to 5:1 for a chain/rope rode) and reversing to dig the anchor into the seabed. A 1:1 scope will pull the anchor out, stern anchoring is dangerous in tidal flow, and tying a boat to a standard diver’s shot buoy will drag the shot off the wreck.

Moving the cylinders down shifts the heavy manifold and valves lower relative to the diver’s center of gravity, correcting a head-heavy trim at the source. Ankle weights treat the symptom poorly, and inflating drysuit boots causes dangerous buoyancy instability (inversions).

In mixed teams, CCR divers must be completely self-sufficient regarding bailout, as open-circuit divers only carry enough gas for themselves and a similar open-circuit buddy. Relying on an open-circuit buddy for CCR bailout is highly dangerous due to the massive gas volume required for a deep bailout.

Remote expeditions demand self-sufficiency in initial emergency response and a robust evacuation plan, as immediate local help is unavailable. Mandating commercial divers or portable chambers is impractical and outside BSAC scope, while restricting depth to 18m does not eliminate DCI or other diving risks.

Nitrogen narcosis is immediately relieved by ascending to a shallower depth; physical contact is necessary to break the fixation. Narcosis does not fade with time at depth, and switching to bailout or performing an emergency ascent introduces severe, unnecessary risks.

The HSE regulations apply when diving is conducted for reward or employment; amateur club instructors operating without financial gain (beyond expense reimbursement) fall under the recreational exemption. Depth, timing, or the type of training do not trigger the ‘at work’ legal status.

A circular search is ideal for locating a small object in low visibility when the drop point (datum) is reasonably well known. Jackstay and U-pattern searches are for large areas with no specific datum, and dragging a chain is a surface-based technique, not a diver search pattern.

Pulmonary oxygen toxicity (tracked by OTUs or UPTDs) develops over extended exposures (multi-day diving/expeditions), affecting the lungs. CNS toxicity (tracked by the CNS clock) is an acute, immediate risk of seizures caused by high PO2 spikes during a single dive or day.
