BSAC Ocean Diver (British Sub-Aqua Club)

The BSAC SEEDS acronym stands for Safety, Exercise, Equipment, Discipline, and Signals. It is the standard framework used to ensure all critical aspects of a dive are discussed prior to entering the water. The other options contain incorrect words like Environment, Entry, or Experience which are not part of the standard BSAC acronym.

In the BSAC BAR (Buoyancy, Air, Releases) check, ‘Releases’ involves checking that all buckles, clips, and weight systems are secure yet easy to release in an emergency. Checking the regulator falls under ‘Air’, while route planning is part of the pre-dive briefing, not the physical BAR check.

According to the BSAC 88 Surface Interval Table, a diver with a Current Tissue Code of E who waits for 3 hours will drop to a Surfacing Tissue Code of B. Code A would require a longer surface interval, while C and D would result from shorter intervals.

During a BSAC CBL, the rescuer uses the casualty’s buoyancy device to lift both divers, simultaneously venting their own buoyancy to act as a brake. Using your own BCD or dropping weights immediately can lead to an uncontrolled, dangerous ascent.

Gas consumption increases proportionally with absolute pressure according to Boyle’s Law. At 20 meters, the ambient pressure is 3 bar, so your consumption is 15 l/min multiplied by 3, which equals 45 l/min. The other options miscalculate the ambient pressure or fail to multiply the SAC rate.

In an AS ascent, both divers must actively control their own buoyancy by venting air as it expands during the ascent, maintaining a safe ascent rate of up to 15m/min. Initiating the ascent by inflating BCDs or dropping weights will cause a dangerous, buoyant ascent.

If pain occurs during descent, it indicates a failure to equalize, risking a tympanic membrane rupture (barotrauma). The correct action is to stop, ascend slightly to reduce pressure, and try to clear gently; continuing to descend or blowing too forcefully will exacerbate the injury.

Joint pain, extreme fatigue, and tingling (neurological symptoms) after a dive are classic signs of Decompression Illness (DCI). The standard first aid is 100% oxygen, hydration, keeping the diver horizontal, and seeking immediate hyperbaric medical assistance. Nitrogen narcosis resolves upon ascent, and the symptoms do not match pulmonary barotrauma or oxygen toxicity.

According to Archimedes’ Principle, the buoyant force equals the weight of the displaced fluid. Because saltwater is denser than freshwater, it provides more upward force (making you more buoyant), requiring additional lead weight to sink.

The BSAC Ocean Diver qualification allows divers to dive to a maximum depth of 20 meters. Under current BSAC standards, Ocean Divers are also trained to use Nitrox mixtures up to 36% oxygen. 18 meters is a limit associated with other training agencies.

Nitrogen narcosis acts as an anesthetic at depth, causing confusion, irrational behavior, or fixation. The effects are immediately reversible by ascending to a shallower depth. It is not DCI (which occurs after or during ascent), oxygen toxicity, or hypothermia.

The Rule of Thirds dictates using one-third of the gas for the outward journey, one-third for the return, and keeping one-third in reserve. One-third of 210 bar is 70 bar. Therefore, you consume 70 bar on the way out and turn the dive when the gauge reads 140 bar (210 – 70).

The flat hand moving horizontally side-to-side is the standard signal for ‘Something is wrong’ or ‘I have a problem.’ A turnaround pressure is usually indicated by a time or gauge signal, leveling off by a flat hand moving forward, and out of air by a slashing motion across the throat.

BSAC tables and training specify a maximum ascent rate of 15 meters per minute up to 6 meters, followed by a slow, controlled ascent from 6 meters to the surface taking at least 1 minute. Other agencies use different continuous rates, but BSAC strictly emphasizes the 15m/min rule with a slow final ascent.

The International Code Flag ‘A’ (white and blue swallowtail) is the internationally recognized maritime signal indicating that a vessel has divers in the water. It warns other boats to keep clear and proceed at a slow speed.

A DSMB is deployed underwater to visually mark the divers’ location for the surface boat cover and to warn other boat traffic of ascending divers. It is not intended as an emergency lift device or a distress signal unless specifically color-coded by local convention.

Boyle’s Law states that at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the absolute pressure. Going from 2 bar (10m) to 1 bar (surface) halves the pressure, causing the gas volume to double. Holding one’s breath during this expansion risks severe lung over-expansion injuries.

Uncontrollable shivering, loss of coordination, and mental sluggishness are signs of advancing hypothermia. The only correct response is to safely abort the dive and warm the diver on the surface. Continuing the dive or stopping will worsen the condition.

For a giant stride entry, holding the mask and regulator prevents them from being dislodged upon impact with the water. Checking the area below ensures you do not jump onto another diver or obstacle. You should have a partially inflated BCD to establish positive buoyancy upon entry.

Scuba cylinders must be stamped with their working pressure, test dates, and internal volume (water capacity) to ensure safe filling and maintenance. There is no ‘maximum depth rating’ for a cylinder, as depth limits apply to the diver and the physiological effects of the gas, not the structural integrity of the cylinder itself.
