BSAC teaches that bailout and reserve gas calculations must always be based on the diver with the highest breathing rate. This ensures sufficient gas is available if that specific diver experiences a catastrophic gas loss and requires sharing during the ascent. Averaging or using the lower rate could lead to out-of-gas scenarios during a rescue.

During a CBL, controlling the ascent rate is critical; if it becomes too fast, the rescuer should dump their own air first, followed by the casualty’s air to regain control. Abandoning the casualty or adding more air contradicts BSAC rescue protocols and worsens the situation.

BSAC recommends a maximum PO2 of 1.4 bar for normal diving. The formula for MOD is (Maximum PO2 / Fraction of O2) – 1, multiplied by 10. So, (1.4 / 0.32) = 4.375 bar; 4.375 – 1 = 3.375 ATM; 3.375 * 10 = 33.7 meters.

The Current Tissue Code (CTC) in the BSAC 88 tables tracks the residual nitrogen remaining in the diver’s tissues after a dive and surface interval. This code dictates the starting tissue state for the next dive, directly affecting allowable bottom times. It does not dictate oxygen flow rates or mandate specific nitrox mixes.

Safety dictates that you must never be dragged to the surface by a deployed DSMB, which risks a rapid ascent and decompression illness. Letting go of the reel immediately eliminates this risk. Fighting the buoyancy or trying to cut the line while ascending are dangerous and likely to fail.

BSAC emphasizes that nitrogen narcosis impairs cognitive and physical functions, and its onset varies between individuals and days. Gradual depth progression is required to safely manage and recognize its effects. Nitrox does not eliminate narcosis, and the effects resolve upon ascending.

BSAC protocol for in-water rescue of a non-breathing casualty dictates an initial period of one minute of rescue breaths (around 10 breaths) to oxygenate the casualty. This is followed by a rhythm of two breaths every 15 seconds while towing. Delaying breaths or stopping entirely drastically reduces the casualty’s chance of survival.

For a conscious, breathing casualty, a demand valve is the most efficient method as it delivers nearly 100% oxygen and only flows when the casualty inhales, conserving the oxygen supply. Non-rebreather masks require much higher flow rates (15 L/min) to be effective, and pocket masks are primarily for non-breathing casualties.

Breathlessness and anxiety can quickly lead to panic and an uncontrolled ascent. The Dive Leader must stop, calm the diver, and encourage normal breathing to break the cycle of hypercapnia and anxiety. Ignoring the issue or forcing a rapid ascent are highly dangerous responses.

Gas consumption is directly proportional to absolute pressure (Boyle’s Law). At 20m, the pressure is 3 bar, meaning consumption is 16.6 bar per ATM. At 30m, the pressure is 4 bar, so 16.6 bar x 4 = 66.4 bar. Therefore, 66 bar is the closest estimate.

The symptoms indicate Decompression Illness (DCI). BSAC first aid for DCI requires laying the casualty flat (to protect the brain from bubble migration), administering 100% oxygen (to create a diffusion gradient to off-gas nitrogen), and seeking immediate medical help. In-water recompression and hot showers are strictly contraindicated.

Neap tides occur when the sun and moon are at right angles to the earth, causing the smallest tidal range (smallest difference between high and low tide). This results in weaker tidal streams, providing easier and safer conditions for diving compared to the strong currents of spring tides.

A diver must personally verify the exact gas mix they are breathing. If an analyzer gives a different reading than the label, the diver must confirm the reading (e.g., by recalibration) and then accurately relabel the cylinder. Relying on an incorrect label or diving with unknown gas parameters can lead to oxygen toxicity or decompression sickness.

A circular search relies on a taut sweep line to ensure accurate navigation and complete coverage. The increments by which the line is let out must not exceed the underwater visibility; otherwise, the searching diver will miss areas between the circles. Speed or floating lines compromise the thoroughness of the search.

The Rule of Thirds dictates using one-third of your gas for the inward journey, one-third for the exit, and keeping one-third in reserve for emergencies. One-third of 210 bar is 70 bar. Therefore, you consume 70 bar on the way in and must turn the dive when your gauge reads 140 bar (210 – 70 = 140).

The symptoms of CNS oxygen toxicity are often remembered by the acronym CONVENTID (Convulsions, Vision, Ears, Nausea, Twitching, Irritability, Dizziness). Visual disturbances and facial twitching are classic warning signs. Euphoria is associated with nitrogen narcosis, while joint pain relates to decompression illness.

If a dive computer fails, the diver loses their decompression status tracking. The dive must be aborted immediately. The diver must ascend with their buddy, relying on the buddy’s computer for a safe ascent rate and to clear any stops, as the buddy’s profile will be similar. Continuing the dive is highly dangerous.

The BSAC SEEDS acronym stands for Safety, Exercise, Equipment, Discipline, and Signals. It provides a structured format for dive briefings to ensure all critical pre-dive information is covered. While emergencies and environment are discussed, the specific “E” stands for Equipment.

A panicked diver on the surface poses a drowning risk to the rescuer. Approaching from behind, establishing buoyancy, and using a secure tow (like the underarm tow) allows the rescuer to maintain control while keeping safely away from the casualty’s thrashing arms. Face-to-face approaches invite being grabbed and pushed under.

Breathing from a regulator in cold air or using the purge button causes a massive pressure drop and gas expansion, which rapidly cools the first and second stages, leading to ice formation and free-flows. Divers are taught to keep regulators dry and avoid surface breathing or purging in cold conditions.
