GUE Fundamentals

GUE Minimum Gas is calculated realistically by accounting for a one-minute problem resolution at depth, followed by a shared gas ascent at standard rates (9m/min to 50% depth, then 3m/min), including minimum deco stops. The rule of thirds is reserved for overhead environments, while fixed reserves or independent free ascents do not account for the realities of a team-based out-of-gas emergency.

In the GUE configuration, the primary regulator is on a long hose and is always donated to an out-of-gas diver because it is known to be working and provides the necessary length for safe shared ascents. Donating the backup, failing to clear the hose from the neck, or prioritizing an SMB deployment violates strict GUE S-Drill (Safety Drill) protocols.

GUE emphasizes team diving using a line-abreast or echelon formation, which allows for passive communication via peripheral vision and primary light beams without requiring divers to turn completely around. Single-file lines, vertical stacks, and clusters severely limit situational awareness and make light communication ineffective.

Nitrox 32 is the standard GUE gas for dives up to 30 meters (100 feet), providing an optimal balance of reduced nitrogen loading while keeping the PO2 at a safe 1.4 ata at the target depth. Air is not used due to higher nitrogen loading, Nitrox 36 exceeds the safe PO2 at 30 meters, and Trimix 30/30 is specifically used when narcosis management is desired at that depth.

During a V-Drill, after verifying the right post is closed by breathing down the primary, the diver must switch to the functional backup regulator and re-open the right post before moving on to isolate the manifold. Failing to re-open the right post before closing the isolator or left post would result in a complete loss of access to breathing gas.

Legs dropping indicates the diver is ‘foot heavy,’ meaning their center of gravity is too far back. Moving the cylinder higher or shifting weight to the upper backplate moves the center of gravity forward, restoring horizontal trim without requiring constant physical exertion.

GUE protocols dictate a variable ascent rate: 9 meters (30 feet) per minute from the bottom to 50% of the maximum depth, followed by a slower ascent rate of 3 meters (10 feet) per minute to the surface, incorporating minimum deco pauses. 18m/min is considered dangerously fast and violates GUE’s focus on bubble mechanics.

The modified frog kick restricts movement to the lower legs and ankles, directing thrust straight back in a tight profile, which prevents silt disturbance in restricted or delicate environments. Flutter kicks direct thrust downward, and full frog kicks require too much horizontal space, both of which would destroy visibility.

The standard GUE harness uses exactly five D-rings to maintain a minimalist, streamlined profile: two on the shoulders (for primary lights/stages), one on the left hip (for stages/SPG), and two on the crotch strap (for DPV towing and gear stowage). Adding extra D-rings violates the DIR philosophy of removing unnecessary failure points.

In the GUE-EDGE acronym (Goal, Unified Team, Equipment, Exposure, Decompression, Gas, Environment), the ‘G’ in EDGE stands for Gas. This prompts the team to review starting pressures, minimum gas, and turn pressures. ‘Goal’ represents the first ‘G’ in the acronym, while ‘Gear’ and ‘Guidance’ are not part of the official sequence.

A rapid horizontal slashing motion with the primary light is the universal GUE signal for an emergency or demanding immediate attention. Shining a light directly into a diver’s eyes ruins night vision, and a slow circular motion is the signal for ‘OK’ or ‘Are you OK?’.

GUE mandates that gas-sharing ascents be conducted side-by-side while maintaining horizontal trim, which allows both divers to easily manage their buoyancy, maintain situational awareness, and communicate. Vertical or face-to-face ascents compromise trim and make managing the BCD/wing exhaust valves difficult.

A GUE Fundamentals ‘Tech Pass’ specifically requires mastery of a double-cylinder configuration (twinset) with an isolation manifold and a primary canister light, as these are mandatory for GUE technical and cave training. Single tanks can only earn a ‘Rec Pass’, and GUE does not utilize independent sidemount or pony bottles for these tracks.

Proper weighting ensures a diver can hold a decompression stop with near-empty tanks without struggling to stay down. The standard check requires floating at eye level with an empty wing and a held breath, then descending upon exhalation; anything heavier is over-weighted, and anything lighter is under-weighted.

The GUE ‘Basic 5’ consists specifically of regulator removal/recovery, regulator exchange, partial mask clear, full mask clear, and mask removal/replacement. While S-drills, V-drills, and helicopter turns are evaluated in the course, they are separate skills and not part of the ‘Basic 5’ sequence.

GUE protocol dictates that the double-ender must be completely removed from the spool and stowed on a D-ring prior to deploying the SMB. Leaving the clip on the spool creates a severe entanglement hazard and risks jamming the spool as the line rapidly unwinds.

For an 18-meter (60-foot) dive using standard double cylinders, the Minimum Gas calculation typically results in 40 bar (600 psi). This provides adequate volume for two divers to resolve a one-minute emergency at depth and complete a shared ascent at standard rates. 140 bar would be excessive (rule of thirds), while 20 bar is insufficient.

A slow circular motion with the light beam is the standard GUE signal for ‘OK’ or ‘Are you OK?’, which is used to verify team readiness before initiating a turn or transition. Flashing lights in eyes or turning lights off are dangerous practices that violate GUE communication protocols.

An effective GUE back kick is performed by extending the legs backward, flexing the ankles to catch the water with the top of the fin, and pulling the lower legs forward without dropping the knees or thighs. Dropping the thighs breaks horizontal trim, and sculling or reverse flutter kicks are ineffective and disturbing to the environment.

The DIR/GUE configuration requires the primary regulator to be on a 5-to-7-foot long hose routed down the right side, under a canister light/waist belt, across the chest, and around the neck. The backup regulator is kept immediately accessible under the chin on a bungee necklace via a short hose routed over the right shoulder.
